Carotid duplex ultrasound
Ultrasound of the carotid arteries — assessment of narrowings and wall changes.
The human brain makes up about 2 per cent of body weight but consumes around 20 per cent of total energy. 100 billion neurons and trillions of synapses form up to 200 million connections per second. After about 5 to 10 minutes without oxygen the brain suffers irreversible damage.
With ultrasound of the carotid arteries (carotid duplex) we check whether blood supply to the brain is limited by narrowings, or whether changes are already present in the vessels that may raise the risk of a stroke.
How is the examination carried out?
First we listen to the neck vessels with a stethoscope. The ultrasound examination follows. For this you lie on the couch and gently extend your head backwards.
At the end of the examination you receive your personal findings report.
